SAN DIEGO (September 18, 2009) – Optelec US Inc., a world leader in innovative and life-changing assistive technologies for the blind and visually impaired, is sponsoring Shared Visions 2009-2010 International Art Exhibit. The Exhibit, at the Eye Care Center (ECC) at the Southern California College of Optometry (SCCO), will showcase 90 works of art by blind and legally blind artists.

A reception for Shared Vision’s unveiling will take place on Tuesday, September 22, 2009 from 7:00 p.m.to 9:00 p.m. The Shared Visions Exhibition, which runs through mid-August 2010, includes 49 artists from Southern California and across the United States, as well as from Israel and Canada.

“Optelec is thrilled to participate in Shared Visions event which celebrates the beauty created by talented artists from across the country,” said Andre Hardy, vice president of sales and marketing for Optelec US Inc. “The fact that the art was created by individuals living with a visual impairment truly inspires all us to rise above obstacles and persevere to greatness.”

According to the National Eye Institute, more than 16 million Americans report some form of visual impairment, even when wearing glasses or contacts. That number is expected to double by
2030 as the aging population brings rising rates of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and other eye diseases. In addition, twice as many women as men in the United States are diagnosed with vision-threatening eye diseases every year.
