Services Help Those With Low Vision

February 12, 2009

The Kennebunk Free Library recently received an Optelec Magnifier Reading Machine donated in memory of Naomi Nunan Burns (Nov. 16, 1932 — July 7, 2008) by her children.

This easy-to-use device magnifies anything placed under it from 2 to 50-plus times its original size. It automatically focuses on items from bills to photos to newspapers. It also features a high-quality monitor and lighting design.

The machine is located in the newly designated Naomi's Nook, on the main floor of the library. Library staff have been trained in its use and will gladly demonstrate it for you.

The Optelec is just one of the services that we have for our low-vision patrons.

Have you used our large print books? We have a great selection. Our collection now numbers more than 2,300 books; additionally, we regularly receive 25 various titles from the Maine State Library every other month and also have a standing order for 20 new titles quarterly.

Widely used by commuters, audio books are also a great resource for those with low vision. We have cassette, CD and Playaway formats of books, and they are all full-text versions.

Another great option is services offered by the Maine State Library, which the library can facilitate. Their Outreach Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped include:

  • Books By Mail For Homebound Residents. Provides free delivery of library materials to individuals who are homebound due to disability.
  • Descriptive Video. Regular commercial films that have been augmented with special narration that describes the action for people who have visual impairments.
  • Large Print. Maine State Library Large Print Service offers free large-print books mailed directly to individuals who are visually impaired.
  • Talking Books. The federal Talking Books program provides free books on special media and machines to people who are blind, visually impaired, physically handicapped or reading disabled as certified by a proper authority.
  • Braille in Maine. Maine State Library Outreach arranges with the Perkins School for the Blind to have Braille library materials provided directly to eligible Maine residents without cost to users. Mainers who would like to borrow materials in Braille should contact the Perkins School directly at (800) 852-3133.
  • Web Braille. Maine Talking Books users are eligible for Web Braille service from the Library of Congress.

Low vision does not mean doing without the joy that reading brings. The Kennebunk Free Library can introduce you to these options and help you keep reading.
